Ardan has an exceptionally kind, gentle, quiet demeanor. Smooth old style Rocky Mountain saddle rack gait and a nice canter. His born-broke, bombproof temperament is truly special and is our favorite thing about him. His naturally fearless, willing disposition makes him a natural at trail obstacles, with many blue ribbons already. Ardan has an unflappable demeanor and is not effected by his rider's emotions or tension, making him an ideal horse for an anxious rider.
He is truly that unicorn so many people dream of - an uncomplicated, easygoing horse that will take care of his rider, so you can feel safe and have fun.
- Exceptionally calm and quiet, not spooky at all
- Very kind, gentle, easygoing, willing, pleasant, gets along with anyone
- Friendly, sweet, silly personality, always meets you at the gate, loves attention
- More whoa than go, willingly moves out upon request but prefers leisurely pace
- Does not react to rider's mood, emotions, anxiety or tension
- Excellent ground manners
- Ground drives, long lines, basic in-hand dressage work
- Stands tied patiently, ground ties, hobble trained
- Come pick you up at the mounting block (or anything), stands patiently to mount
- Self loads in trailer, hauls quietly, backs out
- Has been hauled extensively to shows, parades, trail rides, clinics, camping etc
- Road & traffic safe
- Camps on high tie, in pen, or stall
- Excellent for vet, farrier, bodywork - everyone loves him
- Great hooves - rides barefoot on all terrain
- Smaller horse but has substantial bone and hoof size. Cannon bone circumference 8.5"
- Has done several clinics including bombproofing
- Well trained with a nice handle - soft in the bridle, moves off leg and seat but not hyper sensitive, does lateral work, move shoulders, hips, pivot, sidepass, back, leg yield, shoulder in, etc. Advanced obstacles, great stop, clean canter depart. Well started neck reining but I wouldn't consider him finished. Started bridleless riding.
- Basic cattle work
- Cross water, mud, hills, logs, banks, open gates, etc
- Ponies other horses and can be ponied from anything including ATV, truck, etc
- Has been in several parades
- Ride in bosal hackamore, sidepull, s hack, snaffle, curb bit, halter, started bridleless
- Same quiet ride every day, doesn't matter if he's had time off, do not need to longe or ground work first, just get on and go
- Not herd sour or barn sour, rides alone or in groups, can separate without fuss
- Ride in front, middle or back on group trail rides - can adjust speed to ride with slow or fast walkers. Slower is his default unless asked to move out.
- Used for trail maintenance, stands still to trim branches from his back, will drag brush
- Quick learner, easy to train, willing
- Does not get excited or hot when going faster
- Extensive brain training but has not been worked physically hard at a young age
- Lots of slow easy short trail rides over varied terrain. Has been ridden faster on trails at a gait or canter enough to know he doesn't get excited or reactive, but has not been drilled at faster speeds at his young age. Enrolled in RMHA trail mileage program with miles logged that will transfer to new owner.
- Won MANY blue ribbons in obstacle competitions in his first season under saddle as a 3 year old. Achieved RMHA bronze level versatility award. His naturally fearless willing demeanor makes him a natural at obstacles.
- Current on all health care, coggins, vaccines, deworming, dentistry, hoof care (owned by barefoot trimmer)
OK so he sounds perfect - what's the catch? Well he IS perfect, for the right person. We aim to honestly represent our horses with the goal of finding the perfect partner that will love them. Here's the honest parts you won't usually see in a horse ad -
- Ardan can be lazy. He enjoys riding and never has a bad attitude, but he isn't into working hard. This is not an athletic horse who really wants to put in max effort. He prefers a leisurely ride. He is willing to put in effort if you ask, but he isn't likely to try super hard unless you really ask. If you really ride with intent, he can be light and quick off the aids, but by default he is not a super quick responsive horse, so to get him to perform at a higher level you do need to maintain that responsiveness.
- Is he beginner safe? No 4 year old is 100% beginner safe. Ardan is the most 'born broke' laid back horse I've ever started, but he IS still young. I can safely put beginners on him occasionally in a supervised setting, but I would not recommend him for only beginner rider/handlers full time. This is simply because he is still young enough to test boundaries and does need someone who will maintain them some extent. I do not think he would ever become dangerous, but I could imagine him becoming pushy or taking advantage if handled only by a beginner. Again, not in a dangerous reactive way, more in a lazy way if anything.
- He is not 100% automatic set in his gait yet. I have not drilled gait training intensely yet due to his young age. I prefer to put a really solid foundation on young horses mostly at a walk and not do much faster work until they are more mature. Ardan gaits easily on firm even surfaces, but can still sometimes be a bit trotty on uneven terrain or deep footing. NOT a bouncy hard trot - he sometimes offers foxtrot on trails and it is still very smooth. I do not consider him fully finished in his gait yet though. This takes time and miles to build fitness if you don't use gadgets. He is well on his way but it is not perfect yet. He is NOT pacey.
- He can be studdish in turnout and flirt with mares in heat. He knows not to while riding or being handled, but in the pasture he may be. I don't think it is bad enough to cause problems but wanted to mention it.
- Why is he for sale? He is too laid back for me, I prefer a more sensitive forward ride. I was tempted to keep him around as a safe, reliable, steady, do anything or put anyone on him extra horse... but he is such a special horse with his whole life ahead of him and I know there are TONS of people out there that would absolute LOVE him. He deserves to find his person who really connects with him and will form that bond and partnership he craves.
