We also offer off-site hoof care services at local farms

I am always taking select new hoof care clients, but must prioritize my limited time for clients who share compatible values and goals. I strive to work as a team toward the improved health and soundness of your horse. I believe that open, clear communication is key to building a successful treatment team. Please review the following and if you think we may be a good match for a productive professional relationship to help your horse, please complete the new client form at the bottom of this page.

Here is a summary of what you can expect from me, as well as what I expect from my clients to enable me to do my best work for your horse.

What you can expect from me:

  • I am only taking new clients in Shelby county, Kentucky. I also offer haul in appointments at my farm in Shelbyville.
  • I will make every effort to be on time to appointments. Occasionally a horse earlier in the day may need additional time, and if this happens I will communicate with you about any delays as soon as possible.
  • I will send you an appointment confirmation text, as well as a reminder text the day before your appointment. I will also text you when I am on the way, with an ETA if different from scheduled time.
  • I pursue ongoing continuing education in order to provide your horse with the best hoof care possible, keeping up with the latest research and ideas in hoof care and health.
  • I will be patient and fair with your horse, and if I feel that behavior challenges make it unsafe or not possible for me to provide services, I will inform you and discuss possible solutions if interested.
  • I will help you consider horse management, diet, etc to help grow the healthiest hooves possible. I believe in the whole horse approach to hoof care. The whole body is connected and works together; everything effects the hooves, and the hooves effect everything else.
  • I prefer working with your vet and/or bodyworker, especially for rehabs, and believe a cohesive team approach is critical for success on tough cases.
  • I am happy to answer questions or review photos between trim appointments.
  • I encourage clients to get involved, to learn, to have an open dialogue about hoof care and health. If you have interest in learning to do light touch up rasping between my visits, and if your horse’s hooves are suitable for this, I am happy to give you an old rasp and show you what you can do between appointments to take your horse’s hoof health to the next level.
  • I offer a variety of hoof care and hoof protection solutions to fit your horses needs, such as hoof casts and various composite shoes, though I prefer not to shoe if at all possible. I have therapeutic hoof boots available for rehab cases. I am a dealer and have fit kits for several hoof boot companies and can help advise which model and size will likely work best for your horse.

What I expect from clients:

Scheduling

  • Maintaining an appropriate trim cycle length is very important for optimal hoof health. Typically, this is 4-5 weeks for most horses in summer, 4-6 weeks in winter.  Rehab cases may need trims more frequently, depending on pathology. If the hoof “looks due” it is actually overdue and has been out of balance for some time. I will not do extended trim cycles if I feel it is not in the best interest of the horse. Some horses are able to effectively self-trim to some extent and may be well served by longer trim cycles, but this is usually horses who live out 24/7 in a herd on rough terrain covering lots of ground, and/or are consistently exercised many miles on varying terrain. If your horse lives in a stall and/or soft pasture, it will most likely need a 4-5 week trim cycle. Any horses with medial-lateral imbalance issues or cracks will especially need to maintain a short trim cycle. Owners who have interest in learning to do light touch ups with a rasp between appointments may possibly extend their trim cycle.
  • After each appointment, I will schedule the next appointment at that time. My schedule is usually booked pretty full a couple weeks out and it is often difficult for me to make short notice changes or add last minute appointments (except emergencies).
  • Since I also run my farm and rehab facility, off site trimming appointments are only available on Monday, Wednesday, Friday between 10am-4pm.
  • If your location is at the outer edges of my service area, I may only cover your area when that route is scheduled. If this applies to you, I will let you know in advance. In that case, clients on that route are required to stay on the same schedule with each other, as I do not have time to make special trips out of my immediate area for one or two horses unless it is an emergency.
  • Please have your horse ready to begin trimming at your scheduled appointment time. My schedule is very full and I do not have time to wait for you to go catch the horse. For barns with multiple horses, please have the next horse ready as I am finishing the last hoof on the previous horse.
  • My route is planned well in advance and last-minute changes can cause a lot of extra work or wasted time, and also effect other clients that day. Cancellation fees are $25 within 48 hours and $50 day of cancellations.
  • After the initial appointment, if you are unable to be present for our appointment time, I am usually willing to trim the horse by myself, provided it is in a stall or small close paddock, is easy to catch, and has good behavior.

Working conditions

  • A clean dry safe indoor workspace must be available. The area must be free of manure and mud, with good lighting and firm flat footing. When weather is pleasant, we may opt to work outside if the horse prefers, but shade is required in warm weather. Fans are greatly appreciated in hot weather if you have them.
  • For glue on shoes appointments a clean dry firm flat surface is a must! Concrete floor or rubber mats are ideal.
  • Please have the horse’s legs dry in the wet season if possible. Dry mud is preferable to wet legs that just got hosed. Towel dried muddy legs are acceptable.
  • Please apply fly spray before the appointment in summer if the horse needs it to be able to stand well.
  • If our appointment is during feeding times, please do not feed other horses while I am working on your horse.
  • I may ask to observe the horse in motion. This will help me to evaluate your horse's gait, evaluate hoof landings and biomechanics, make needed corrections, assess lameness, etc.

Horse behavior

  • I expect the horse to be able to stand still for 20 minutes without moving around, stomping, kicking, pawing, pulling legs away repeatedly, or biting. If you cannot easily hold each leg up continuously for 2 minutes, it is not reasonable to expect me to. I am unable to work on dangerous, untrained, or ill-behaved equines.
  • When I come for an appointment, I charge my full rate whether I trim all four feet or I am unable to trim any feet on an animal. Reasons I may not be able to complete the trim include difficult behavior due to pain, lack of handling/training, or dangerous behavior. I am patient and will try my best to work with the equine but will not proceed if I feel unsafe.
  • Most horses stand better if they have had adequate turnout or exercise prior to the appointment. They also usually prefer having another horse friend nearby.
  • If the horse has pain issues that make it difficult to hold legs up for hoof care, please consult with your vet about possible medications or therapy that may help the horse be more comfortable on trim days.
  • I am not there to train your horse; I am the hoof care provider. If the horse does not know how to stand quietly for hoof care, I suggest that you work with a trainer if you are unable to train the horse yourself.
  • I do not typically work on sedated horses, as I do not feel that is a good long term solution for behavior problems, and sedated horses can have explosive bursts that can be dangerous. There are exceptions, such as severe neglect rescues or therapeutic glue on shoes for horses not able to hold up legs long enough. In those cases, please work with your vet for sedation plans, I am not legally able to give any medications or injections. I prefer to evaluate the horse’s gait prior to administration of sedation when possible.
